Summary

This case is designed to demonstrate issues and problems in sustainability-driven entrepreneurship in the Maryland oyster industry. The once-thriving industry has been decimated in recent years by the degradation of the Chesapeake Bay’s water quality, which has all but destroyed the oyster population. Students have an opportunity to analyze the scenario of a small business owner on a quest to identify alternatives to his dependence on the natural environment for his survival. The case allows students to review entrepreneurship concepts as well as to understand the integration of environmental management issues into strategic decision making, particularly for small firms. The discussion of the case can also be expanded to include legal and ethical issues resulting from improper management of the natural environment. Also available in French.
